350 km to the north of Colombo lies Jaffna. It is inhabited mainly by Hindu Tamils. It has a very warm climate. Foreign visitors are impressed by the colorful Hindu temples, a feature of which are arrays of images of deities to whom the Hindu pay homage. There are no rivers in Jaffna, but the persevering people here have devised contrivances to surface the underground water to irrigate their rich cultivations of potatoes, onions, chilli, yams , other vegetables and bananas.
The palmyrah, or the fan palm grows abundantly in the area. Toddy is extracted from its flowers to produce arrack which connoisseurs say is of a different flavor to coconut arrack.
The palmyrah leaf is the raw material for manufacture of handicrafts such as baskets, mats and the like. Jaffna growers supply a fair volume of grapes for the market in the south. The northernmost point of Jaffna is only 40 Km from the closest point to south India.
