Unfortunately, the natural beauty of the fall and its surrounding area is at risk due to the nearby Kukulegama Development Project. It seems possible that the resulting displaced soil could seep into the stream, causing it to silt up.

 

The Makeli Falls is situated in the Kalutara District. Take the Matugama - Agalawatte road to Lathpandura and then the Molkava road to reach the fall.

All though this was a popular bathing place before the Kukuleganga Project, now a viewing platform has been built upon the river and bathing here is probibited. The fall can be reached on the route to Kukuleganga Holiday Resort.

Dunhinda Waterfalls of Sri Lanka

                   Dunhinda waterfall is one of largest waterfalls of Sri Lanka and which is at Soranathota of Badulla District Sri Lanka. Dunhinda waterfall is made by trowing of water from high gap of Badulu River. The waterways of Dunhinda waterfall are started from Uma Oya, Hal Oya and sme other small rivers at Bandarawela or Welimada area. Dunhinda Falls is at 2km off from Badulla - Mahiyangana road and about 10km from Badulla town. Clear walking path is available for access the falls.  There are another small waterfalls available closed Dunhinda waterfalls. Some identify one of the as Small Dunhinda.

                        Dunhinda waterfall is one of beautiful waterfalls of Sri Lanka. Downside of Dunhinda there are three main reserviors of Sri Lanka called Randenigala, Rantambe and Victoria. Uma oya is directed to Rantambe. Uma Oya starts from Horton Plains and flows through Ambewela, Nuwaraeliya, Uva Paranagama, Welimada, Attampitiya, Haliela, Badulla and ended in Mahaweli River.

                   Several years ago, Badulla town was a large lake. In that period Dunhinda waterfall was not presented. Large Vine was blocked the way of Badulu River and then the city was a lake. The man called Ranhawadi Dhuraya aspect to remove this vine. He tried several time to remove it. Finnaly he could remove the vine and unfortunetly he was died course of slept. After removing the Vine water moves down with spreading. Then the Large and beautiful waterfall of Badulla was born and it identifis as Dunhinda.

                  Bathing and playing at waterfall is very danger because downside source is deep and consist of heavy rocks.  The drama called "Dunhinda Addara" by Asoka Handagama is describes about related environment of Dunhinda.

Bapath ella

The Bopath Falls cascades in the shape of a bo (Ficus religiosa) tree (hence its name) and is the most comprehensively studied fall in Sri Lanka. Its source is the Kurugana River that later joins the Kaluganga River at Kurugaomaodara.

The average temperature of the area is 26.9 - 27.8 degrees Celsius and the annual rainfall of the fall's catchment area is 5080mm. The mean speed of the flow is 6 cubic metres per second. The upper reach of the fall is made up of granite and biotite virin, and is covered by sand. The water from the fall irrigates the paddy fields of the Udakada and Kuruwita areas.

The surrounding plant and tree life includes attikka (Ficus racimosa), kumbuk (Terminalia arjuna), midella, dun (Doona spp), para (Wormia suffruticosa), ginihota (Cythia spp), rathmadiya, ketala (Lagenendra oveta), Beduru (Dryneria spp), orchids, varieties of meewana (Madhca) badal, hanassa, makulu and beduru. Animal species include wild boar, Meemina deer and reptiles, and the water is home to many species of fish including bulathhapaya, lellu, magura, korali, sonnu and eel. In addition to its rich bio-diversity, the fall is also steeped in folklore. One such story tells how a youth from Colombo made a pilgrimage here, and on losing his way was helped and sheltered by a local village girl.

A love developed between the two and she became pregnant before his departure. He left, promising to return but never did. Overcome with grief, she took her own life by plunging into the fall. Villagers say that her ghost (which appears as a floating blue light) haunts the fall.

Another local belief is that a treasure trove lies somewhere within the fall and that one thousand human sacrifices are needed to retrieve it. Bopath Falls is in the Ratnapura District, Kuruwita Divisional Secretariat at Agalwatte village. Take the road from Columbo to Ratnapura and turn left along Devipahala road. After 3km the fall is reached. (The Dodam Falls is located close by).

Waterfalls - Around Nuwara Eliya

Lover’s Leep Falls ................................................................................................................

          This is off the Nuwara-Eliya - Kandapola Road. The waters are taken to brew the famous Nuwara-Eliya Beer. There is a famous legend behind the name of this waterfall. It says that a Prince who lived in Nuwara Eliya had met a beautiful girl in a nearby village and fallen love with her. But the king did not allow the Prince to carry on with his love affair. The Prince suffered lot by his father’s ruling and later on one full moon day he had climbed up the top of the rock with his fiancée and jumped on the fall. Since then it was known as the lovers leap.

People can see this wonderful lovers leap falls when looking at Pidurutalagala Mountain at the second mile post on Hawa Eliya road. It is about 30 meters high and falls off from a huge rock. It is truly a wonderful gift of Mother Nature gifted to Nuwara Eliya.

Laksapana Falls.................................................................................................................

Laksapana Falls rise from the Laksapana estate and plunges into the Maskeliya Oya via Maoussakelle. Viewing this fall is easy if you camp down at Upper Glencairn, Dick oya.
Its - off the Nuwara Eliya - Kandapola Road. The Nuwara Eliya beer is brewed from the water of the stream.

 Devon Falls drops 97 meters and is named after Devon, a pioneer coffee planter. It is 6 Km west of Thalawakelle and there is a special parking and viewing spot at the 20th mile post.

Ramboda Ella Falls .........................................................................................................

A gigantic waterfall (329 ft. ) having three parts and very close to the 53km post along the above A-5 trunk road. The first part is above the road in the jungle (100m), second part is close to the road (3m) and the third part (100m) is below the road.
Traveler should descend to the "Ramboda basin", where the famous "Ramboda Inn" situated from where he can see the whole fall. When we were there the upper part was covered with a fog and what you see in the picture was the third part.











Hellboda Ella Falls .................................................................................................................

This is by the side of A-5 trunk route Kandy to N'Eliya east of Pussellawa.

It is about 60m (197ft) when both parts taken together and a very attractive yet simple waterfall. It is by the side of the road and one can almost descends to the foot of the falls.

 Ihala Devathura Ella Falls........................................................................................................

The culvert built close to the 50th kilometer mile post on the Kandy – Nuwara Eliya highway is built over the Ihala Devathura Waterfall. At the first glance on would assume this waterfall to be a branch of the Ramboda falls. Anyway, the Ihala Devathura falls consists of three smaller waterfalls, and the fall in close proximity to the highway is not so attractive to the visitor, and is approximately 10 meter in height. However, the most attractive and panoramic waterfall is situated a litter above the highway and is approximately 72 feet in height. Situated surrounded by thick vegetation about four kilometers above the highway, this waterfall is most magnificent.

Glen Falls .................................................................................................................................

Glen Falls is the second largest waterfall in the city. It is about 10 meters high and falls from the Single Tree Mountain which is at a walking distance from the city centre. It was said that in the past the waterfalls was so beautiful that it had carried large volume of water. But due to destruction of the forest cover by unauthorized development activities in the surrounding area its existence is being threatened.

Ravan Ella Falls...........................................................................................................

Situated in the Dry zone off Welimada this beautiful waterfall is a continuous stream of life to the villagers. It provides much needed water for the cultivation of vegetables, their main income. The life-line role of this tiny, yet beautiful waterfall is seen when we first arrived the village. While the surrounding mountains were dirty and dry this particular mountain was greenish and cultivated. According to villages the water of this stream has to be protected from smugglers day and night and for that they have "a shift duty".
It is 40m (131ft) tall and in the Uduhawara village. 

Bombure Ella Falls ...................................................................................

This 50m (164ft) and very broad waterfall, a tributary of Dalugala Oya (to Mahweli ganga) is situated in the village Parawella.
When we visited it, there is hardly any water, but during the rainy season it turned to be a gigantic waterfall.

 Poona Oya Ella Falls.............................................................................................................

 In the same location as above (at Ramboda Inn), there are about 5 waterfalls descending down to make the Kothmale river. One of them is "Poona Oya Ella Fall" which is actually a twin fall.

It is about 100m (330ft) and both falls about 4m away from each other. This is seen from A-5 road at 53km post and there is an observation site there.

Gerandi Ella Falls.........................................................................

Gerandi Ella waterfall is situated on the Kandy - Nuwara Eliya main highway at the 50th kilometer milepost, and the 9th culvert is constructed over the Gerandi Ella waterfall. When one looks at the mountain top from this spot, we could see a colossal rock that is shaped like a massive fortress. The water cascading from this rock top comes down and half way the water thins out to a misty sheen. The height of this waterfall is approximately 100 meters (328 ft). It is approximately 1 1/2 Km from the highway. However, if we travel by the banks of the Gerandi Ella, we could not reach the waterfall proper.

NuwaraEliya, Punduloya highway winding through scenic undulating mountain ranges and diverse vegetation almost touches the Sheen waterfall - a discerning traveler could feel the droplets on one's face due to close proximity of the cascading water by the side of the highway.

Nanuoya Falls...............................................................................................................................

Situated at the highest point of the mountainous lush hill country - Nanuoya waterfall 60 meters in height (197 ft) of undulating waterfall consists of two sections is truly a magnificent sight for the traveler to the hill country by the Ceylon Government Railway.

St.Clair Falls........................................................................................................................

These falls are unusual type consisting of a double cascade derived from different water sources. The bigger waterfall, the Mahal Ella is 80m high and is situated on the Kotmale Oya. Flowing over a rock ledge then divides into three cascades plunging into a big pool. The smaller one of these two falls, the Kuda Ella is only 50m high and situated on a tributary of the Kotmale Oya. Just 3Km from Talawakelle to visit the falls there is a 500m footpath starting from the A7.
