Sri Lankan use the fingers of their right hand to mix and eat their rice and curry. Although this food is lukewarm when served, the taste remains due to the spices and condiments used. Apart from this staple diet, they consume various food items such as hoppers, egg- hoppers, string hoppers and rotti made out of rice flour. These are served for breakfast or dinner along with curries. The country has rich resources of tropical fruits. Some of these are seasonal and available in plenty only during the seasons. These include mangoes, rambuttans and mangosteen. Papaya, pineapple and a variety of bananas are available the year round.
Rice is the staple food of Sri Lanka. It is taken with curries made of fish, meet, dried fish, and different vegetables (tropical and western). These curries are flavoured with a rich variety of spices and condiments. Sri Lankans like their curries “hot”. It is best to serve a little curry and to mix it with a lot of rice so that it will not taste too spicy. A rice and curry meal could be made mild and tastier by mixing it with a portion of freshly scraped coconut.
