Although the island is tropical, due to its geographical position and the mountain ranges. It has a variety of climatic conditions such as warm and humid, warm and dry like the European summers, and also harshly dry areas.
Sri Lanka is a tropical island in the Indian Ocean. Lying at the Southern point of the sub-continent, and about 850 km north of the equator. It is shaped like a halved pear with the tip towards the north, and the wider part towards the south in the direction of the equator. The longest distance from north to the south is 430 km, and the widest from east to west 210 km. Its area is around65,000 Sq. Km.
The four climatic seasons are unknown in Sri Lanka. It has almost 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night throughout the year. The Island experiences monsoonal rains even though the temperature do not fluctuate much. The main monsoon periods are the South West monsoon, May to August, and N.E. monsoon from November to February. The South West monsoon is stronger than the North East Monsoon. This is because the North East monsoon winds blow over large land masses loosing some of its moisture before reaching the island, whereas the South West window blow over the Ocean without any hindrance.
The highest mountain reaches a height of 2,500 m. The Island has a vast proportion of flat land.
