Established during Sri Lanka’s 19th century Buddhist revival it is not merely a temple but a centre for vocational training. Gangaramaya is currently one of Colombo’s most important Buddhist temples. The temple was founded by Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumanagala Nayaka Thera and his pupil Devundera Sri Jinaratana Nayake Thera converted the small temple into the large structure it is today. The Buddhist temple has a collection of elephant tusks, rare artefacts, and relics of Buddha acquired locally and from abroad.
The Gangaramaya is a site to be visited to experience the eclectic mix of the architectural design on display. The temple’s design has been influenced by the architectural features of Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and China. The temple has the following features the Boddhi tree (sacred Fig tree), pagoda, seema malakaya (an assembly hall for monks) and the chamber of the relic. Moreover the museum and library situated in the premises are a source of insight to this marvellous structure.
